Zimulti should only be taken as directed. If a dose is missed in the morning, it should be taken as soon as it is remembered, unless it is near the end of the day. In that case, the forgotten dose should be skipped, and the patient should resume taking Zimulti the next morning as directed.
Dosing of Zimulti should never be doubled. If Zimulti is taken in excess by accident, the patient should call his or her doctor immediately.
How Zimulti works
Rimonabant, the active ingredient in Zimulti is a cannabinoid (CB-1) receptor antagonist. CB-1 receptors, which are found in the nervous system and in fat cells, receive messages related to appetite, including hunger and cravings. These messages are then sent to the brain, which acts on them. As a receptor antagonist, Zimulti blocks messages of hunger so that they cannot reach the brain. As a result, a person who takes Zimulti will feel less hungry. It also appears that when CB-1 receptors are blocked, cravings for addictive substances like nicotine are reduced as well.
A number of clinical studies have been conducted to examine the effectiveness and safety of Zimuli. More than 6,600 subjects took part in one of four different studies of the drug. The subjects in the tests weighed an average of 207 to 229 pounds (94 to 104 kilograms). All of the studies, which lasted between a year and two years, compared the effects of treatment with Zimulti to placebo. In general, patients who were given Zimulti lost more weight than those who were given a placebo. Many of the subjects who were successful in losing weight were able to keep the weight off for two years.
Another set of studies examined the effects of Zimulti on smoking. In these studies, subjects who took Zimulti quit smoking in higher numbers after 10 weeks of treatment than subjects who were given a placebo. The subjects who took Zimulti and stopped smoking as a result did not gain weight, or they gained only an insignificant amount of weight, while subjects who stopped smoking without Zimulti gained an average of 6 pounds.
